Air India plans to expand its fleet in a few years. The proposed new aircraft will be a small and comprehensive mix from two manufacturers – Airbus and Boeing – media reports on Monday.
Air India is in talks with both companies regarding the possible purchase of 300 smaller body jets, industry sources said. Airbus and Boeing declined to comment on the talks, previously reported by Bloomberg.
Currently, Air India is a mix of Boeing aircraft (777-200LR, 777-300ER and 787-800 Dreamliner) as well as Airbus (319, 320, 320Neo and 321) with a number 113 available.
It will be interesting to see how Tata Group supports ship expansion.
Air India is also said to have asked its pilots if they want to train to pilot the A350, which means the airline plans to install the same on its ship on long-haul flights.
However, Air India officials could not be reached for comment.
Tata Group acquired Air India from the Indian government last year. The group already has Vistara and Air Asia India under its framework. – Agencies
